Grand View Hospital in Sellersville has announced a temporary closure of its maternity ward beginning December 1, following the resignation of several OB/GYN physicians. During this pause in services, all expectant mothers who would typically deliver at Grand View will be redirected to St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus in Milford Township.

While labor and delivery services will be suspended, Grand View Hospital confirmed that it will continue offering outpatient obstetrics and women’s health care, ensuring that patients can still receive essential prenatal and gynecological services locally.

A Growing Concern: Maternity Care Shortages in Pennsylvania

This temporary shutdown reflects a broader, statewide strain on maternity care. According to data from the Pennsylvania Health Access Network, nearly one-third of Pennsylvania counties no longer have a hospital that provides maternity services, and close to half of all counties have just one maternity ward available to residents.

In contrast, Bucks County remains one of the few counties in Pennsylvania with multiple maternity care options, including:

  • St. Luke’s Upper Bucks

  • Doylestown Hospital

  • St. Mary Medical Center

Even with these resources, hospitals across the state continue to face significant staffing shortages, particularly among OB/GYN specialists, contributing to service reductions and temporary closures like this one.

What This Means for Local Families

For families in Sellersville and surrounding communities, this temporary change may require adjustments in birth plans and travel times. However, St. Luke’s Upper Bucks, located just a short distance from Grand View, is equipped to support increased patient volume.

As Grand View Hospital works to rebuild its obstetrics team, the community will continue to have access to women’s health services and prenatal care without interruption.
