South Coatesville Borough may soon see a major change in how public safety services are provided. Borough officials are currently reviewing a proposal that would dissolve the local police department and transfer all law enforcement responsibilities to the Pennsylvania State Police.

According to borough leadership, the goal of this move is to ensure continued police coverage while improving efficiency and reducing long-term costs for residents. The Pennsylvania State Police have already been notified of the borough’s request for full coverage, which is a required step in the transition process.

Why Is South Coatesville Considering This Change?

Local governments across Pennsylvania have increasingly explored partnerships with state police as a way to manage rising operational costs, staffing challenges, and budget constraints. In South Coatesville’s case, officials believe the shift could provide more comprehensive coverage while offering potential financial savings to taxpayers.

If approved, the ordinance would officially dissolve the South Coatesville Police Department at 11:59 p.m. on January 27. Beginning January 28, the Pennsylvania State Police would assume full responsibility for law enforcement services in the borough.
