The Pennsbury School District is taking a major step toward building a new high school. During a recent public hearing, district administrators presented plans for a 497,000-square-foot facility with a maximum price tag of $269 million.

According to Superintendent Dr. Thomas Smith, the new high school is necessary because the current facilities are outdated, not fully ADA-compliant, and present physical and security challenges for students and staff.

During the hearing, administrators outlined three possible building designs and four funding options to roughly 100 community members in attendance.

The proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Many opponents — primarily senior citizens and long-time residents — expressed concern about the cost and potential impact on taxes. Supporters, largely parents and newer residents, emphasized the importance of providing students with a safe, modern learning environment.

Residents who were unable to attend still have an opportunity to weigh in. Questions and written comments can be submitted until 4 p.m. on October 6 to the district’s Chief Financial Officer. If the project moves forward, construction bids could be considered as early as December.

For families considering a move to the area, the outcome of this project could have a significant impact on property values, school rankings, and community growth. A modern high school often makes a school district more desirable, which can influence real estate demand.
