The long-awaited redevelopment of the former Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove in Horsham Township is officially moving forward. Township officials recently approved an official redevelopment map for the 862-acre site off Route 611, marking another major milestone in a project that has been years in the making.

The newly adopted map outlines where public lands, streets, trails, utilities, and infrastructure will be located, providing a clear vision for the future of this significant property. This step follows the township’s recent rezoning of the land, a move designed to signal to the Navy that Horsham is prepared to advance redevelopment while negotiations over the land transfer continue.

The Willow Grove base was officially closed in 2011, and a federally approved redevelopment plan was established in 2012. Horsham Township Manager William T. Gildea-Walker explained that the zoning changes are intended to help ensure that the land is protected from heavy industrial development, such as warehouses, and instead reflects the community’s long-term vision.

The next phase in the process will be a comprehensive rezoning effort, aligning land use with the approved redevelopment plan. This is expected to include a mix of community-friendly development, infrastructure, and public spaces that will help transform the former base into a vibrant new hub for Horsham residents.

As one of the largest redevelopment projects in Montgomery County real estate, the transformation of the Willow Grove base is being closely watched by homebuyers, investors, and local businesses alike.
